Therapy & Summer
School is out. It is hot in Texas. It is summer. I work with adolescents and adults. Every May, the conversation focuses on continuing therapy through the summer months. By July, my adolescent clients are asking for a break from therapy until school starts For some individuals, they don’t to continue or start therapy in the summer. Summer is supposed to be fun and light. Do I really want to go to talk about hard things in the summer? There are some individuals who do not want to do the work in the summer. Several of my clients pause treatment in the summer months. Other individuals decide to start therapy in the summer. For my practice, every summer is different in terms of my caseload. This summer several clients graduated from therapy as they achieved their goals. Others are traveling too much this summer so they’ll reach out in the Fall if they need to schedule a session. Right now, I have recently started with several new clients who have found the summer works for them. Work is slower for them. They have put off scheduling therapy for some time and decide now is the time.
Therapy is available year round. The summer may be a better time of year for you. We often do not know how long therapy will take so it’s not a guarantee you’ll be finished by Labor Day. You may make some progress in the summer months. Remember, therapy is once a week for 53-60 minutes. You can still enjoy the summer even if you are going to therapy. It’s up to you. You may find you have more available time in the summer because you are not attending school or your work offers flexible hours during the summer. Halfway through the year, you may have met your deductible. It’s a great time to start using your behavioral health benefits.
We also know that life does not stop in the summer. You may have experienced a trauma recently or it is the anniversary of the loss of a loved one. There is a lot going on in our country and the world. The news impacts each person differently. Whatever is going on, you seek out help.
